AI Governance Certification Cost (Updated) : AIGP, AAISM, SecAI+, CAISP and CAIGSA Compared
AI Governance Certification Cost: AIGP, AAISM, SecAI+ and CAIGSA Compared
Exam fees are the number everyone compares. They are also the smaller half of what you will actually pay. This guide sets out the published fees for the major AI governance and AI security credentials, adds the renewal costs most comparisons leave out, and shows what each one really costs to hold for five years — including the free route in.
Short answer (read this first)
- AGZIT-AIG — free to study and sit. Governance-only scope. Free study guide, free practice assessment, free final assessment; USD 79 only if you want the verifiable credential
- CAIGSA — USD 199. Governance and security in one credential, no prerequisites, no annual maintenance fee. Recertification is 20% of the certification fee every two years
- SecAI+ — around USD 349. Technical AI security focus, on the CompTIA pathway
- AAISM — USD 599. Requires an existing CISM or CISSP, plus annual maintenance
- AIGP — USD 799. Rises to around USD 1,299 over five years once renewal fees are counted
- The rule: compare five-year cost of ownership, not exam fees. The gap widens considerably once renewals are included
Exam fees at a glance
| Credential | Issuer | Exam fee (USD) | Prerequisite |
|---|---|---|---|
| AGZIT-AIG | AGZIT | Free to sit · 79 for the credential | None |
| CAIGSA | ACBM | 199 | None |
| SecAI+ | CompTIA | ~349 | None mandatory |
| AAISM | ISACA | 459 member / 599 non-member | Active CISM or CISSP |
| AIGP | IAPP | 649 member / 799 non-member | None |
The cost most comparisons leave out
Professional credentials are not one-time purchases. Most require continuing education and an annual or biennial fee to stay active, and those recurring costs compound.
| Credential | Ongoing fee | CPE requirement |
|---|---|---|
| AGZIT-AIG | Certificate valid 2 years — confirm renewal terms with the issuer | None stated |
| CAIGSA | No annual fee — recertification at 20% of the certification fee every 2 years (≈USD 40) | None |
| SecAI+ | CompTIA CE programme — confirm current terms | Continuing education units |
| AAISM | 20/year member · 35/year non-member | 10 CPE hours per year, 30 over a 3-year cycle |
| AIGP | 250 maintenance fee every 2 years, waived with IAPP membership at 295/year | 20 CPE credits every 2 years |
The CPE requirements themselves are usually free to meet. IAPP webinars and publications generate credits at no cost for members, and most professionals can satisfy the 20-credit requirement without paying for anything extra. It is the maintenance fee, not the education, that drives the recurring cost.
Five-year cost of ownership
This is the comparison that actually matters. Figures below assume the cheapest legitimate route for each credential — no optional training, free CPE sources, non-member pricing where membership does not pay for itself.
| Credential | Scope | Year 1 | Years 2–5 | 5-year total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AGZIT-AIG | Governance only | 0 to sit · 79 credential | Confirm with issuer | from ~79 |
| CAIGSA | Governance + security | 199 | ~80 | ~279 |
| SecAI+ | Security only | ~349 | CE fees | ~349+ |
| AAISM | Security only | 649 | 140 | 789 plus CISM/CISSP first |
| AIGP | Governance only | 799 | 500 | 1,299 |
The scope column matters as much as the money. AGZIT-AIG and AIGP cover governance; SecAI+ and AAISM cover security; CAIGSA is the only one here covering both in a single credential. Comparing a governance-only fee against a combined-scope fee is not a like-for-like comparison.
CAIGSA’s figure includes the USD 199 certification fee and two recertifications at 20% of that fee, falling at the two-year and four-year points. AAISM’s includes the USD 50 application fee, the USD 599 non-member exam and USD 35 annual maintenance. AIGP’s includes the USD 799 exam and two USD 250 maintenance fees at the two-year and four-year renewal points. Training is excluded throughout — adding official AIGP training would push that credential past USD 2,000, since on-demand courses are listed between roughly USD 995 and USD 1,500.
The free way to find out if this field is for you
Before spending anything, you can complete an entire AI governance programme and sit its assessment at no cost.
AGZIT-AIG — Certified AI Governance Analyst
Six modules covering the EU AI Act risk tiers and post-Digital-Omnibus timeline, ISO/IEC 42001, the NIST AI Risk Management Framework, AI system inventory and classification, lifecycle controls, and the assurance evidence a supervisor actually asks for.
The study guide, the practice assessment and the final assessment are all free, and a sample certificate is shown up front — so you can finish the whole programme and see exactly what you would receive before deciding on the verifiable credential.
- Scope: AI governance only — CAIGSA extends this to AI security as well
- Format: ~12 hours study, 50 questions, 57 minutes, 70% to pass, 2 attempts
- Prerequisites: none
- Cost: free to study and sit; USD 79 only for the ONRIGA-accredited verifiable credential
The prerequisite trap
What you are actually paying for
Price differences in this market reflect four distinct things, and it is worth being clear about which you need.
Recognition
The issuer’s name doing work on your CV. Recognition varies sharply by region and by role — a credential well known in one market may mean nothing in another, so check what appears in the job postings you are actually targeting rather than assuming.
Assessment
Whether anything was actually tested. A completion certificate confirms you finished a video; a scored examination with a defined pass mark confirms you knew something. Check the pass mark and question count before you buy.
Verification
Whether an employer can confirm your claim without contacting you. As AI credentials multiply, this matters more each year — an unverifiable certificate is increasingly treated as no certificate at all.
Training
Often the largest line item and almost always optional. Official AIGP training runs USD 995–1,500, but the body of knowledge is published free and many candidates pass without paying for a course.
Which one is right for you
Choose AGZIT-AIG if…
You are not yet sure AI governance is your field, or you want a governance-only credential at the lowest possible cost. You can complete everything free and decide on the verifiable credential afterwards.
Choose CAIGSA if…
You are moving into AI governance from compliance, risk, audit, KYC, IT or cyber security, want governance and security covered together in one credential, need an assessed and independently verifiable qualification with no prerequisites, and are not in a position to spend four figures before you know the field suits you.
Choose AIGP if…
You are targeting a US or EU role in privacy, legal or policy, and the five-year cost is affordable or employer-funded.
Choose AAISM if…
You are already at manager or senior level in information security, hold an active CISM or CISSP, and want to add an AI specialisation on top of an established career. If you do not hold the prerequisite, this is not your starting point.
Choose SecAI+ if…
You are already on a CompTIA pathway and want a technical credential focused on securing AI systems and defending against AI-driven threats.
The honest summary
What price buys in this market is recognition, assessment rigour and verifiability. Those three things are not always bundled together, and the most expensive option is not automatically strongest on all of them.
Spending USD 1,300 on a credential to find out whether AI governance is your field is a poor use of money. Start free, confirm the field is yours, then certify for the scope your role actually needs — and if your employer is funding it, the calculation changes again.
Where CAIGSA fits — and what ONRIGA accreditation means
The Certified AI Governance & Security Analyst (CAIGSA) covers AI governance and AI security in a single credential — the EU AI Act, NIST AI RMF and ISO/IEC 42001, alongside AI risk assessment, adversarial threats, human oversight controls and the governance of AI systems used in financial crime compliance. It carries no prerequisites and no annual maintenance fee, and is assessed by a 50-question examination at a 75% pass mark. Recertification falls every two years at 20% of the certification fee, which keeps holders assessed against a current syllabus in a field where regulation moves quickly.
About ONRIGA
ONRIGA — the Organization for Next-gen Regulatory Intelligence & Global Accreditation — is a global RegTech body providing accreditation and verification to individuals, institutions and training providers across compliance, regulatory and financial crime prevention. Its framework aligns with FATF, ISO and international compliance protocols, and every application is reviewed independently by sector-specific compliance experts.
Every ONRIGA-accredited certificate is secured on blockchain, giving employers tamper-proof, round-the-clock public verification of a credential without needing to contact the holder. In a market filling rapidly with certificates that cannot be independently checked, that verification is the difference between a claim and a confirmed fact.
The lowest five-year cost for governance and security together
CAIGSA is USD 199, with no annual maintenance fee and recertification at 20% every two years — assessed by examination, independently accredited and blockchain-verified through ONRIGA, and confirmable by any employer. It is the only credential compared here that covers both domains in one certification.
