American Compliance & Business Management Association (ACBM)

The American Compliance & Business Management Association (ACBM) is a private standards and accreditation body for professional education in compliance, anti–money laundering (AML), customer due diligence (CDD), know your customer (KYC), risk management, and business management.

ACBM exists to answer a question employers and candidates both ask about a compliance qualification: does it teach what the role requires, and was it assessed properly? We answer it by publishing accreditation criteria, reviewing training programmes against those criteria, and refusing accreditation where the evidence does not support it.

The Association carries out two functions. It accredits and quality reviews programmes delivered by other training providers, and it develops and issues its own professional certifications. Those functions sit in tension, and the safeguards we apply are set out below.

What ACBM Does

The two functions below are related in subject matter but are governed, staffed, and decided separately.

Function One

Accreditation & Quality Review of Training Providers

Training providers, academies, and in-house learning teams apply to have a programme reviewed against ACBM's published criteria. Review is evidence-based: we examine the syllabus, the assessment instrument, the marking scheme, tutor competency records, and certificate issue controls — not the marketing material.

  • Syllabus mapping against current regulatory expectations
  • Assessment design, difficulty calibration and pass-mark justification
  • Examination integrity, identity verification and re-sit policy
  • Tutor and author subject-matter competency
  • Learner records, certificate issue and verification controls
  • Complaints, appeals and content-update processes
Function Two

ACBM's Own Professional Certifications

ACBM develops and awards a focused portfolio of specialist certifications in AML and customer due diligence, built to the same criteria we apply to external programmes and designed around the work compliance professionals actually perform: risk assessment, file review, escalation, and written justification of decisions.

  • Structured syllabi with published learning outcomes
  • Scenario- and typology-based assessment
  • Documented examination and completion policy
  • Independently verifiable holder records
  • Scheduled syllabus review as risks and typologies change
On the conflict between these functions. A body that awards its own certifications and also accredits other programmes has a commercial interest in the outcome, and we treat that as a conflict rather than ignoring it. Two safeguards apply: accreditation decisions on external programmes are taken by a review panel that does not hold commercial responsibility for ACBM's own certifications, and the accreditation criteria are published in full and applied identically to internal and external programmes. Readers should weigh our published criteria and decisions on their merits, knowing that interest exists.

How the Accreditation Review Works

Accreditation is a documented review with a defined outcome. A programme is accredited, accredited subject to conditions, or refused.

  1. 1

    Application & evidence submission

The provider submits the full syllabus, assessment materials, marking scheme, tutor credentials, and learner-record procedures.

  2. 2

    Technical review

Reviewers map the content against current regulatory expectations and identify gaps, outdated typologies, and unsupported claims.

  3. 3

    Assessment & integrity review

The examination is reviewed for validity, difficulty, and defensibility, alongside identity checks, proctoring arrangements, and re-sit rules.

  4. 4

    Panel decision

The review panel issues a written decision with findings. Conditional outcomes specify what must change and by when.

  5. 5

    Publication of status

Accredited programmes are listed publicly with scope and validity period, so employers can confirm status independently.

  6. 6

    Periodic re-review

Accreditation is time-limited. Programmes are re-reviewed on cycle, and status can be suspended or withdrawn if standards are no longer met.

What We Assess, and Why

Each criterion exists because a specific failure is common in compliance training.

ACBM accreditation criteria, what is examined, and the risk each addresses
Criterion What is examined Risk it addresses
Regulatory currency Whether content reflects current standards, typologies, and supervisory expectations Learners trained on obsolete rules and retired red flags
Occupational relevance Whether learning outcomes map to tasks actually performed in the role Certification that signals nothing useful to a hiring manager
Assessment validity Whether the exam tests the stated outcomes at an appropriate level Credentials awarded for recall of marketing copy
Examination integrity Identity verification, attempt controls, item security, re-sit policy Pass-by-repetition and third-party sitting
Tutor competency Documented subject-matter experience of authors and instructors Content written without practitioner knowledge
Record integrity & verification How holder records are maintained and independently confirmable Unverifiable or falsified credential claims
Claim accuracy Whether public statements about recognition and outcomes are supportable Overstated regulatory or employer recognition

Independence & Integrity

Independence is only meaningful where it is structural. Our position rests on the commitments below.

  • Published criteria. Accreditation requirements are public and applied uniformly to every applicant, including ACBM's own programmes.
  • Decisions on evidence. Outcomes follow from submitted documentation. Fees cover the cost of review and do not secure a result.
  • Refusal is possible. Applications that do not meet the criteria are declined or made conditional, and conditions are tracked to closure.
  • No paid placement. ACBM does not sell accreditation status, listing position, or favourable review.
  • Editorial content is separate from accreditation. ACBM publishes articles and roundups that discuss certifications, including its own and those of providers it accredits. That content is editorial commentary, not an accreditation outcome, and carries no weight in any review decision. Where an article mentions an ACBM programme or an accredited provider, that relationship is disclosed in the article.
  • Withdrawal on cause. Accreditation can be suspended or withdrawn where standards lapse or claims are found to be inaccurate.

For syllabi, learning outcomes, assessment format, and enrolment, visit Professional Certifications. Credential holders can be confirmed through Graduate Verify.

For training providers: if you deliver compliance, AML, KYC, or risk programmes and want them reviewed against ACBM's criteria, request the criteria document and application pack. We will tell you whether a programme is likely to meet the standard before you pay for a full review.

For employers: accreditation status and credential holder records can be verified directly, so a claim on a CV can be checked rather than assumed.
