AIGP Certification: Requirements, Cost and Alternatives
AIGP Certification: Requirements, Cost and Alternatives
The Artificial Intelligence Governance Professional (AIGP) is the credential most people encounter first when they start looking at AI governance certification. This guide sets out what the exam actually involves, what it costs to earn and keep, who it suits — and what to consider instead if it does not fit your situation.
Short answer (read this first)
- Issuer: IAPP — the International Association of Privacy Professionals
- Prerequisites: none. Anyone can sit the exam
- Exam: 100 multiple-choice questions, 2.75 hours, scaled score of 300 out of 500 to pass
- Cost: USD 649 for IAPP members, USD 799 for non-members — before training
- Term: two years, then a maintenance fee plus 20 continuing education credits
- Suits: privacy, legal and policy professionals in markets where IAPP credentials already appear in job postings
- Before you commit: a free governance-only alternative lets you study, practise and sit an assessment at no cost — covered below
What the AIGP covers
IAPP publishes a Body of Knowledge that functions as the exam blueprint. It was restructured from seven domains into four, and the current version is 2.1. If your study material does not reference the current version, you are preparing against an outdated blueprint.
| Domain | Focus | Questions |
|---|---|---|
| I | Foundations of AI governance | 16–20 |
| II | How laws, standards and frameworks apply to AI | 19–23 |
| III | Governing AI development | 21–25 |
| IV | Governing AI deployment and use | 21–25 |
Within those domains the testable material includes the EU AI Act and its risk-based obligations, the South Korean AI Basic Law, applicable US federal and state law, the OECD AI Principles, the NIST AI Risk Management Framework and Playbook, and ISO 22989, ISO/IEC 42001 and ISO/IEC 42005. Operationally it covers roles and accountability, policies, third-party governance, impact assessments, data provenance, testing and documentation, release readiness, monitoring, incidents and post-market duties.
Exam format and requirements
| Element | Detail |
|---|---|
| Prerequisites | None |
| Questions | 100 multiple choice, 85 scored plus 15 unscored |
| Duration | 2.75 hours allotted, with an optional 15-minute break midway |
| Question style | Roughly 30% tied to case studies presenting real-world AI development and use scenarios |
| Scoring | Scaled 100–500, with 300 as the pass mark. A score of 300 does not equate to 60% correct |
| Delivery | Pearson VUE test centres worldwide, or remote proctoring through OnVUE |
| Validity of purchase | The exam must be taken within one year of purchase |
| Retakes | Permitted after a waiting period under IAPP policy |
What the AIGP costs
| Item | Cost (USD) |
|---|---|
| Exam — IAPP member | 649 |
| Exam — non-member | 799 |
| IAPP membership (optional) | 295 / year |
| Official training (optional) | 995 – 1,500 |
| Certification maintenance fee | 250 per two-year term for non-members; included in membership |
| Continuing education | 20 credits per two-year term — usually free to obtain |
The certification term is two years, beginning the day after you pass. To recertify you must pay the maintenance fee for the term and submit evidence of 20 continuing education credits aligned to the Body of Knowledge. Fail either obligation and the credential is suspended.

Who the AIGP suits
A good fit if…
- You work in privacy, legal, policy or compliance and need to translate AI rules into operational controls
- You are in a market where IAPP credentials already appear in job postings
- Your employer is funding certification, or the multi-year cost is comfortable
- You already hold a CIPP or CIPM and are extending into AI governance
Less of a fit if…
- You are still deciding whether AI governance is your field
- You need AI security content as well as governance — the AIGP is governance-weighted
- You are self-funding from a market where the fees represent a significant outlay
- You want a shorter route to a first credential before committing further
Test the field before you spend anything
If the second column above describes you, there is a straightforward way to resolve it. You can complete an entire AI governance programme and sit its assessment at no cost, then decide.
AGZIT-AIG — Certified AI Governance Analyst
Governance-only scope, so it covers much the same territory as the AIGP: the EU AI Act risk tiers and post-Digital-Omnibus timeline, ISO/IEC 42001, the NIST AI Risk Management Framework, AI system inventory and classification, lifecycle controls, and the assurance evidence a supervisor or auditor asks for.
The study guide, the practice assessment and the final assessment are all free, with a sample certificate shown up front — so you can finish the programme, see exactly what you would receive, and decide on the verifiable credential afterwards rather than before.
- Scope: AI governance — comparable to the AIGP’s coverage, without the AI security layer
- Format: ~12 hours study, 50 questions, 57 minutes, 70% to pass, 2 attempts
- Prerequisites: none
- Cost: free to study and sit; USD 79 only for the ONRIGA-accredited verifiable credential
What it does not carry is the IAPP name, which is the AIGP’s principal asset in markets where that name already appears in job postings. If you are targeting one of those markets and have the budget, the AIGP remains the stronger signal. If you are not certain yet, finding out for nothing is the better first move.
Alternatives worth considering
AAISM — ISACA
Advanced in AI Security Management, aimed at security managers and senior practitioners. Requires an active CISM or CISSP, so it is an extension of an established security career rather than an entry point. Exam is USD 459 for members and USD 599 for non-members, plus a USD 50 application fee and annual maintenance.
SecAI+ — CompTIA
A technical credential covering the securing of AI systems and defence against AI-driven threats. Around USD 349, with no mandatory prerequisite, and it sits naturally after Security+ or CySA+ on the CompTIA pathway.
ISO/IEC 42001 auditor routes
Lead Implementer and Lead Auditor pathways against the AI management system standard, offered by several training bodies. These are organisation-facing rather than individual career credentials, and suit consultants and auditors more than in-house practitioners.
AGZIT-AIG — AGZIT
Governance-only, like the AIGP, and the only option here that can be completed and assessed at no cost. USD 79 for the verifiable credential if you want it. Covered in full above.
CAIGSA — ACBM
Certified AI Governance & Security Analyst. Covers governance and security together rather than separately — the gap the AIGP leaves — with no prerequisites, at USD 199 and no annual maintenance fee. Assessed by a 50-question examination at a 75% pass mark, independently accredited and blockchain-verified through ONRIGA.
How to choose between them
Match the credential to the job you are trying to do, not to the biggest name. A governance credential will not help a penetration tester, and a technical security credential will not help someone writing AI policy.
Then compare the full cost of holding each one, not the exam fee alone — renewal fees and continuing education requirements differ sharply, and the gap widens every year. The full cost comparison sets out five-year totals for each.
A note on supply and demand
Published estimates put the number of AIGP holders worldwide at roughly four to five thousand. That is a small population for a discipline covering the EU AI Act, the NIST AI Risk Management Framework and the full lifecycle of deployed AI systems, and scarcity is part of why AI governance roles are currently well compensated. It also means the field is early enough that no single credential has become a universal hiring requirement — which is worth remembering before committing four figures to any one of them.
Considering a lower-cost route into AI governance?
The Certified AI Governance & Security Analyst (CAIGSA) covers AI governance and AI security in one credential — the EU AI Act, NIST AI RMF and ISO/IEC 42001, alongside AI risk assessment, adversarial threats, human oversight controls and the governance of AI systems used in financial crime compliance.
No prerequisites, USD 199, no annual maintenance fee, and every certificate is independently accredited and blockchain-verified through ONRIGA.
